The Ink-Saving Maintenance Routine You’re Not Doing (But Should Be)

Printer manufacturers won’t tell you this: Most ink ‘failures’ are preventable. Follow these steps to stop throwing away half-used cartridges.

1. Printhead Cleaning: The Right Way

  • Monthly deep clean: Run your printer’s built-in cleaning cycle (check manual) when you change cartridges
  • Stubborn clogs? Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, gently wipe the printhead contacts
  • Never use rubbing alcohol - it degrades rubber seals

2. Cartridge Storage That Actually Works

  • Short-term: Keep cartridges in their original packaging, lying flat
  • Long-term: Seal in an airtight bag with a silica gel packet (not the fridge!)
  • Before reinstalling: Gently wipe copper contacts with a dry microfiber cloth

3. Print Weekly (Even If Just a Test Page)

Ink dries out faster than you think. Printing a single color page weekly prevents:

  • Clogged nozzles (the #1 cause of ‘bad’ cartridges)
  • Wasted ink from deep cleaning cycles
  • That infuriating ‘alignment failed’ message

When to Give Up on a Cartridge

Even with perfect care, cartridges fail. Replace if you see:

  • Streaking after 3 cleaning cycles
  • Missing colors that won’t resolve
  • Error messages persisting after reseating

Pro Tip: Buy from sellers with good return policies - many ‘defective’ cartridges are just poorly stored during shipping.
