After testing 8 popular PG-245 refill kits against Canon’s OEM cartridges, we found staggering differences in color fidelity - even between kits costing the same. Here’s how they stacked up:
Methodology
We printed standardized test pages (containing gradients, skin tones, and Pantone swatches) using:
- Fresh OEM Canon PG-245 cartridge (baseline)
- 8 refill kits from top Amazon sellers (B0G1R37VJC, B0FVY8TTVN, etc.)
- Identical Canon Pixma TR4720 printer
- 92 Brightness 24lb paper
Color accuracy was measured with an X-Rite i1Pro spectrophotometer, evaluating Delta-E values (lower = more accurate).
Top Performers
-
**** - Delta-E 1.8
- Near-OEM accuracy in blues/greens
- Includes syringe with blunt needle for clean refills
- $16.99 for 5 refills (vs $28 OEM)
-
JetBest Eco- - Delta-E 2.3
- Excellent reds/yellows
- Bottle design reduces spills
- $49.99 bulk kit (50+ refills)
Avoid These
- **** - Delta-E 6.9
- Greens shifted teal, skin tones oversaturated
- 37% of test prints showed banding
Pro Tip
For critical color work, always:
- Run a nozzle check post-refill
- Print a calibration page
- Store unused ink in amber glass bottles (light degrades dyes)
